We nestle in nature, and draw our living as parasites from her roots and grains, and we receive glances from the heavenly bodies, which calls us to solitude, and fortell the remotest future.
–Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Nature.”
The longer we live out here in our farmhouse on our woodsy bit of 37 acres, the more I feel like a part of my soul is uncurling out of hibernation, peeking its head out, and deciding that it likes the environment. It’s been years since I’ve lived out here in the middle of Nature. And it’s beautiful.
Is that part of my spiritual awakening, too? How many sages have suggested we return to Nature to experience fullness of soul? And how many have imperiously declared that we should dominate it instead? There seems to be nothing to be recommended for the second path. I think I’ll follow the first!
